Program Erasmus+ wszedł w życie 1 stycznia 2014 r. i zastąpił dotychczasowe programy: „Uczenie się przez całe życie” (oraz jego programy sektorowe – Erasmus, Leonardo da Vinci, Comenius i Grundtvig), akcję Jean Monnet, program „Młodzież w działaniu” oraz pięć innych programów (m.in. Erasmus Mundus i Tempus). Program będzie realizowany w latach 2014–2020.

Program Erasmus+ oferuje wsparcie finansowe dla instytucji i organizacji działających w obszarze edukacji i szkoleń, młodzieży oraz sportu w Europie. Odpowiadając na wyzwania nakreślone przez dokumenty strategiczne europejskiej polityki (przede wszystkim strategię Europa 2020), program ma się przyczyniać do rozwijania umiejętności jego uczestników oraz zwiększania ich szans na zatrudnienie, a także modernizacji systemów edukacji, szkoleń i wspierania młodzieży.
